Ok then, a little background. I played prophecies, although I only played the first 4 or 5 missions. After that I played a Warrior in Factions, leveled it to 20 and finished the storyline, got my 1.5k armor (not 15k).

I just bought Nightfall, and I would really appreciate advice on what class to play. Dervish looks pretty cool, but as soon as I logged in and got to the first area I saw a TON of Dervishes. I would like to do well in both PvE and PvP, and I'm basically a casual player.

I like playing melee characters, and I like cool looking armor. I like having a wide variety of skills that will help both my team and me prosper. I like to solo, but I also enjoy running missions and such with other people. So I usually quest alone and do missions with real people. I also foresee PvP in my future, so I'd like a class that does well in PvP.

Thanks for your help!

A dervish is quite fun to play. They're very self sufficient, do a ton of damage, and also make the best runners.

yes, i also am looking at starting playing again. i leveled a warrior, necromancer, mage, and monk to 20. then a ranger to 20 with factions. i stopped playing a few months after factions. I too would like to know what neccessary info that i have missed since then. just a brief summary of 'need to know' info would suffice.

At the moment NF is absolutely swamped with dervish (mainly because they're one of two new class's, and paragons look ridiculous). However this will change in time, just as it did with sassy's and rt's in factions. Derv's are fun to play (i've taken one through nf) though if you're considering making one i'd probabaly take it through a different campaign.

This will make it ALOT easier to find mission/quest groups etc.

By way of armor, in my opinion there are two sets of armor combo's which i enjoy and you may also be interested in. These are the elite sunspear (dyed white) and the primeval (dyed black/deep blue). Check them out on guildwiki if you get a chance (search: dervish armor).

cheers
and remember make a character you think you'll enjoy, dont base it off the fact that other people are doing the same.

good luck

And dervishes don't? They are wearing dresses, male and female.

So true, there are a ton and if you want to be different, then go for paragon. But, because there are so many dervishes, there will be plenty of different builds to try.

For a class that does well in all of the things that you want, try a Dervish.
even though there are so many of them, its because they are good. As stated above, there are many builds to try, and if you dont mind wearing a dress, then the Dervish is for you!
As for important things that you missed, the biggest would probably be Nightfall, and the announcement of GW 2 and GW Eye of the North. Also, with Nightfall come Heroes, which are very important. check Guildwiki, not A-Net's wiki, for everything that you want to know. (A-Nets wiki is small as of yet)

I have all 3 campaigns, starting out in Prophecies I made a Ranger but really have not finished the game then Factions came out and I dropped prophecies all together as I was hooked on alliance battles. Then Nightfall came and I was completely absorbed in getting my paragon to the end. I just haven't been able to get into a character type I enjoy playing. Overall, I took a long break from playing PVE and just tried out HA and anything pvp. I found this to be a great way to try out different classes.

I kinda missed pre-searing and...well .. just about everything in the first campaign so I decided to go back to prophecies. I have made a warrior and I am loving it! So much I can do on a warrior that I couldn't do on my ranger but I reckon its just I know so much more now than I did when I first started playing.
